Almonds Get An A Grade!

Almonds are a healthy food to add to your diet. They can be eaten whole, slivered, sliced, chopped or as milk, butter or flour. If you soak almonds overnight, their skin comes off easily and it is believed peeled almonds are better digested. About 14 almonds have 100 calories and are a healthy snack. Almonds offer the following benefits:

  • Heart-Healthy Food: Almonds are considered heart healthy because they have monounsaturated fats and fiber which help reduce total cholesterol and LDL. They also have anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties and are high in Magnesium.
  • High in Calcium: Calcium is needed to maintain bone density and almonds are a good source of calcium in vegan and lactose free diets. Almond milk may be fortified with calcium and is also a good source of calcium.
  • High in Vitamin E: Foods rich in Vitamin E may be beneficial to treat dementia and post-menopausal hot flashes. Vitamin E also has anti-oxidant properties and is good for the skin and eyes.
  • Almond Milk: Almond milk is nutritious, low in calories and cholesterol, and enriched almond milk is high in calcium and Vitamin D. Almond milk is made by blending almonds with water and then straining the mixture to remove the solids.
  • Almond Butter: Almond butter may be a good replacement for butter and sugar in some recipes. You can prepare almond butter at home by grinding dry roasted almonds in a food processor to a paste of your consistency.
  • Almond Flour or Almond Meal: Almond flour is gluten-free and low in carbohydrates. It can be used in recipes in place of all-purpose flour but it is higher in calories and fat. It is nutrient dense and has all the benefits of almonds.
