High Cholesterol
We offer the following tests to diagnose and manage high cholesterol.
- Lipid Profile
- Advanced Lipid Profile- for certain high risk patients- includes LDL particle number & size (please check with your insurance if this test is covered)
Managing your diet and exercise is key to managing high cholesterol.
- Goals: Goals in the treatment of high cholesterol include increasing fiber and reducing saturated fat intake, avoiding trans fats, losing weight, exercising most days of the week and drinking alcohol in moderation.
- Increase Fiber Intake: Soluble fiber reduces the absorption of cholesterol into your blood. Increase your fiber intake, particularly soluble fiber. This is found in oatmeal, apples, flaxseed, nuts, beans and pears.
- Avoid Trans Fats and Reduce Saturated Fat Intake: Trans fats are often used in margarines and store-bought cookies, crackers and cakes. Reduce saturated fat intake including red meat, full fat dairy products and coconut oil.
- Exercise Most Days of the Week: Moderate physical activity may increase your HDL or good cholesterol. Exercise at least 30 minutes most days of the week.
If you have high cholesterol or a family history of high cholesterol, please consult with our doctor to manage your nutrition.
